WhatsApp Web may soon shed its image as a limited companion to the mobile app. A set of upcoming features could bring the browser-based version closer to feature parity with WhatsApp’s mobile and desktop apps.
WhatsApp is reportedly developing voice and video calling for WhatsApp Web. At present, users can only make calls through the mobile app or the desktop client. The web version supports messaging, file sharing, and media viewing, but it does not allow real-time calls. The new update aims to change that.
The company is also working on group voice and video calls on the web. This feature would mark a major upgrade. Users currently need the desktop app or a phone to join group calls. Browser-based group calling would make WhatsApp Web more useful in workplaces, especially on systems where users cannot install apps.
Another addition under development is call links. These links would let users invite others to a call through a shareable URL. Participants could join without being added to a group chat. This would simplify coordination and mirror features offered by video conferencing platforms.
WhatsApp Web may also receive call scheduling tools. Users could set calls in advance, add a title, and share timing details with participants. This feature would help users plan meetings, interviews, and personal calls, particularly across different time zones.
These updates build on WhatsApp’s recent push to make its services more device-independent. Multi-device support already allows users to stay logged in on WhatsApp Web even when their phone is offline. Calling features would extend that shift and reduce reliance on the mobile app.
A stronger web client would also help WhatsApp retain users during work hours. Many people spend most of their day on browsers and prefer not to switch devices for calls. By calling support, WhatsApp Web could serve as a primary communication tool rather than a secondary option.

WhatsApp has not announced a release date. The features remain under development and may roll out gradually. Early versions could come with limits on the number of participants, which WhatsApp may expand later.
If introduced widely, the update would change how users view WhatsApp Web. The browser version would move beyond basic messaging and match much of what mobile and desktop apps already offer. That shift would narrow a long-standing gap and make WhatsApp Web far more relevant for daily communication.
