OpenAI has initiated the deployment of a new age prediction function on ChatGPT, which signifies a transformation in the way the platform considers the user safety issue. The new feature aims to accurately detect under-18 users’ accounts and, to offer adolescents stronger safeguards while adults still enjoy the flexibility. Age verifications were mainly dependent on the self-declared information given during registration, which could be outdated or incorrect.

How the ChatGPT Age Prediction System Works

The ChatGPT age prediction system utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze a combination of behavioral and account-level signals. These include how long an account has existed, typical usage times, activity patterns over time, and the age a user has stated. OpenAI states that this system does not replace self-reported age but rather adds an extra layer of assessment when age details are unclear. By combining multiple indicators instead of relying on a single input, the model aims to improve accuracy as it learns from broader usage trends.

Safeguards Applied When an Account Is Flagged

If ChatGPT infers that the account belongs to a person under 18 years of age, then extra precautions will be applied immediately. These restrictions prevent teens from accessing content that is categorized as unsuitable for them, such as graphic violence, sexual or violent role play, self-harm, risky viral challenges, and extreme beauty standards or unhealthy dieting.

OpenAI states that these decisions are informed by research into child and teen development, which reveals differences in risk-taking and emotional regulation compared to adults.

Errors, Verification, and Global Rollout

OpenAI admits that errors are possible. Adults incorrectly flagged can restore full access through a simple age confirmation process using Persona, an identity verification service. The feature is rolling out globally, with the European Union following in the coming weeks due to regional regulatory requirements.
